Core Principles of NLP

Presuppositions

NLP has several core principles and invites people to try them or to 'act as if' they were true and notice the difference.  Known as presuppositions in NLP, here are some of them:

'The Map is not the Territory' is a fundamental guiding principle of NLP.  As stated earlier, human beings respond to their perceptions of reality - or 'Map'.  We create a model of the world in our minds based upon our perceptions, beliefs, attitudes and experiences of life.  There are two mistakes we commonly make.  The first is taking our model of the world to be reality itself which is akin to going into a restaurant and thinking the menu is the food it describes.  If certain perceptions do not support us or place limitations upon us we can change them, since after all they are only perceptions.  The second notion is thinking that other people have the same model of the world as we do.  Each person has their own unique 'map' of the territory according to their perceptions and experiences.  Understanding this can enhance the way we think about and relate to others around us.

Failure is a very 'final' kind of concept.  However when we think in terms of feedback and results we keep the door open, we can acknowledge what worked well, what needs improving and make plans for the next opportunity.

NLP believes every individual already has all the resources (the behaviours, abilities, beliefs etc.) to achieve their goals, they just need to be able to tap into them.

'Anything can be accomplished if the task is broken down into small enough steps.'  NLP excels in its capacity to help people define exactly what they want, work out what they need to do to get it and check out what impact its likely to have on other aspects of their lives, so they don't gain in one area at the expense of another.

'The body and mind are a single system.'  Any thought you have whether it be empowering or limiting has a measurable effect on your body causing changes in your breathing, pulse rate, posture and even pupil dilation.  So imagining yourself as more confident in a particular situation is not just picturing things in your mind, you're actually physically putting the body in confident mode, right there and then.  This has vast implications for personal change, health and excellence.
